Since 2001 baby loss awareness week has fallen in October, and it recognised across the world. It gives the families the opportunity to join with others to remember their babies, whether in public or private anywhere in the world. The hope is it will help mothers and fathers who have lost a child to feel more connected with the others who have experienced this cruel and devastating loss. Often after the death of a child there’s not enough time to really cherish any memories that you had together. It may have been the small human being but leaves a massive hole in ones life, not just for the parents, but the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who have been there to help.
Often, there is a sense of guilt that more could have been done. Along with all the hormonal changes that take place within the woman during pregnancy and after, can lead into a spiral of depression, which is difficult for family members to deal with as well.
In the UK, anyone who’s lost a baby is invited to take part in the “wave of light” by burning the candle for at least an hour at home or with a communal space at 7pm on October 15th. Connecting with others in honour of those babies who lit up their lives for such a short time.
