Baby loss awareness week

loss of a baby

Since 2001 baby loss awareness week has fallen in October, and it has recognised across the world. It gives the families the opportunity to join with others to remember their babies, whether in public or private anywhere in the world. The hope is it will help mothers and fathers who have lost a child to feel more connected with the others who have experienced this cruel and devastating loss.

It’s hard to cherish memories after losing a child. Loss, though small, leaves a large void; not just parents, but extended family and friends feel the impact.

Guilt often arises, feeling like more could have been done. Hormonal changes during and after pregnancy can lead to depression, difficult for family members.

In the UK, anyone who’s lost a baby is invited to take part in the “wave of light” by burning the candle for at least an hour at home or with a communal space at 7pm on October 15th. Connecting with others in honour of those babies who lit up their lives for such a short time.

Case Study

Lorraine was referred to me by a friend. She had lost her baby only hours after birth. Feeling bereft, life had no purpose for her anymore.

As we looked at her goal of feeling better, she noted that she didn’t want this experience to be wasted. As time went on, she found she no longer blamed herself. She was able to think more compassionately towards the events which happened. True to form, she started to collect the types of things a woman may need if she found herself in a hospital in an emergency like she did. For those babies born too early, she researched all equipment and supplies a new mum might need. From the tragedy of losing her first baby, she went on to establish a charity to help women like her.

It’s astounding how hypnotherapy can change things around 180 degrees for some people. She went on to have a healthy baby two years later.
