Stress buster tip 10

To lower stress sort out your problems
Solve your problems don’t just brush them under the carpet

Develop a positive thinking style and try to see things differently

The main tenet of Solution Focused thinking is to find a solution to a problem. If you have no control over the change then you need to see it differently. Firstly you can talk over your problem with somebody before it gets out of proportion, a friend, colleague or a family member not connected with the problem could possibly help you see things from a different and less stressful perspective. If that is not possible seeking help from a professional such as myself can do that job for you, in the safe confines of a confidential environment.

If you allow that persistent nagging problem to dominate your mind it will eventually lead to sleep interruption, ill health and, or burnout. Instead of going over the problem again and again, try thinking about what life would be like if that problem had magically disappeared. Sometimes this can allow someone to see how he or she can change a situation by thinking laterally.

An example of this becoming self employed. One of the most common problems for people who have decided to go self employed is isolation. We imagine how wonderful it is to role out of bed in the morning with no commute and just get on with the day, only to find that after an hour or so they become distracted, feel lonely and start to chat on social media and lose their ability to focus on what they should be doing.

Working as a therapist for example – there is the temptation to work only when clients want to see you, however breaking your day and week up this way is very disruptive. When I was faced with these problems, when I first started, one of my friends suggested I just wasn’t suited to it and should go back to work full time. I however started to think of all the ways I could fulfill those needs and found networking groups and an art class that helped surround me with people on my terms, and working from a clinic helped sort the time structure out.

I also went to “Jelly” meet ups, where an organisation took over a suite of offices for self employed to go and work so they were not alone. This was marvelous as it allowed me to do all my admin around other people.

So think what you want to happen – I want to feel less isolated – and think of all the ways you can fulfill that need and put them onto your RED, AMBER, GREEN to do list and get them sorted – you’ll be relieved you did.
