Find time to socialise.

My mother often used to say you can tell what a person is like by the friends they keep. Activities we engage in with friends can help us to relax, but make sure they are positive interactions and the result is a lot of laughter. This boosts the immune system, which will help any stress we face. However friends who are always negative, and bring you down, will do the opposite.

Sometimes, people asked me if they should ditch certain friendships, and I reply, “not necessarily”. For you can start asking those friends who are always negative. “What’s been good?”. By getting them to focus on the positives in their life, you can encourage them, which in turn will make them feel happier.

One of my long-term clients, who has severe anxiety due to brain damage, did not have a particularly active social life. By discussing the topics which interested him, we were able to come up with some plans to find him activities that he enjoyed. By doing so, he managed to join a group of people who met on a regular basis to talk, and slowly he started making new friends. By doing this his confidence levels grew and his anxiety went down.

Quite often, when I see people who are very stressed, they have no social interaction that is positive. They go to work, they may not enjoy work, they come home, have a drink, watch TV and go to bed – that’s all they do. So it’s no wonder they feel stressed. If that’s your life, then maybe you need to do an audit to look at activities you could be doing to help you find that laughter in your life.
